Rush to secure place in real,- BERLIN MARATHON which will take a slightly changed and even more attractive route
Limits are set
2001-05-08Even though there are still almost five months to go before the 28th real,- BERLIN MARATHON takes place on 30 September 2001, the organisers are experiencing a record number of entries.
So far, organisers SCC have received 14,478 registrations from 59 countries - a massive increase on the 5,283 registrations this time last year.
Just over half the registrations were submitted on-line. At this rate, last years record number of participants - 34,090 runners from 83 countries - looks set to be broken soon.
The organisers felt it necessary to set the following upper limits:
6,000 inline skaters
250 power walkers
Once these limits are reached, no more registrations will be accepted. We therefore recommend that you register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Potsdamer Platz makes its return to the marathon course
This year the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON course has been changed slightly at several points making it both faster and more attractive.
Following the completion of construction work at Potsdamer Platz, the race will return to the route it had to leave five years ago.
These changes mean that a total of six corners have been done away with, one of which was so sharp that it forced inline skaters and wheelchair athletes to reduce their speed considerably. This will also please the runners, who achieved world records in Berlin 1998 and 1999, and will no doubt help then to improve on their previous results. The routing via Potsdamer Platz means that a host of attractive sights will be included, amongst others the Philharmonic Hall, the State Library and the New National Gallery. All of this will bring in additional highligts to what is already a very attractive course.
