Information for runners in the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON 2002, their partners and spectators:
Last year’s experience showed that there would have to be some changes behind the finishing line, due the limited amount of space. The accompanying plan shows this year’s arrangements for the finishing area.
Please note the following changes.
The runners’ finishing area: Like last year, the runners’ treatment area is in Tauentzienstrasse and Kleiststrasse as far as Martin-Luther-Strasse, where there will be beds for massage.
There’s a positive change in the clothing return area, which, as last year, is in Lietzenburger Strasse as far as Nürnberger Straße, but there’s much more room.
As usual, this is where the showers and changing tents are.
Further on, in Nürnberger Strasse, is the family rendezvous, which is much bigger this year.
The whole finishing area – finishing line to family rendezvous area – is 1,100 metres long. It has to be this long because of the large number –33,000 – of runners. In this area medals have to be awarded, and space blankets and water handed out. There has to be room for stands serving electrolytic drinks, tea and fruit, as well as enough space for the 300 massage beds and 90 clothing return trucks.
The skaters’ finishing area:
As for the runners, the service area is in Tauentzienstrasse and Kleiststrasse, but for skaters it’s on the north side of the road.
This year the massage and shower area is in Kleiststrasse as far as Nollendorfplatz.
There is a family rendezvous area at the southern end of Kleiststrasse where you can meet family or friends.
This year, the first time with the new finish, there won’t be a crush like there was last year.
After completing the course everyone needs room to rest and get their breath back. This year they will be able to.
