On Sunday, September 18, 2005, one week before the 32nd real,- BERLIN-MARATHON, the traditional “Cult Run” and commemorative run will be jogged on the original marathon course from 1974, parallel to the Avus highway!
The start is at 9 a.m. at the same spot where it began in 1974, at Waldschulallee 80 in Charlottenburg near Mommsen Stadium. Senior Race Director Horst Milde will sound the starting shot, as is tradition.
286 courageous runners in 1974
In 1974, 286 courageous runners took off on the marathon course, running 2 laps to the Wannsee Beach (turnaround point was before the Mommsen Stadium) and back. 244 made it to the finish in front of the Mommsen Stadium. The female victor in 1974 was Jutta von Haase (LG Süd) in 3.22:01. Only 10 women participated in this first Berlin People’s Marathon organised by SCC. The male champion was Günter Hallas (LG Nord), in a time of 2:44:53.
By the way, Günter Hallas will be running his 30th BERLIN-MARATHON on September 25, 2005!
‘Oxygen Recuperation Run’
At the Cult Run on Sunday, groups of runners will traverse a maximum distance of 15 km (to the corner of the Havelchaussee) at a moderate pace as a so-called ‘Oxygen Recuperation Run’. Of course the 31-time marathon guru Bernd Hübner will be there at this “Cult Run,” setting the pace at the front together with John Kunkeler.
In 1998, as a special highlight for the 25th anniversary of the BERLIN-MARATHON, each participant received a commemorative race number for the Cult Run.
In 1974, Bernd Hübner, a rower (BRC Brandenburgia), came in 72nd in 3:38:06. He has finished every BERLIN-MARATHON since then, and with 31 BERLIN-MARATHON races behind him, he is the singular record holder of the BERLIN.MARATHON Jubilee Clubs. Cristl Heine leads the women with 23 times participating.
The Jubilee Club currently has 1,471 members from 14 countries. There will be 90 new aspiring club members competing at this year’s marathon, who have already successfully run the BERLIN MARATHON 9 times.
After the “oxygen recuperation run” homemade cake, drinks, and coffee will be served on the lawn in front of the Mommsen Stadium, where you can join a fun crowd to get mentally prepared for the 32nd real,-
