Farah second to Mottram in New York 10 k

2006-05-21

Mo Farah finished runner-up behind Craig Mottram in Saturday's New York Healthy Kidney 10 km Road Race. Farah, who has been training at altitude in Colorado in the Unuted States, was beaten by Mottram, last year's world 5000m bronze medallist.

The Australian, who also finished runner-up in this year's Commonwealth Games race over the distance, won in a time of 28:13 minutes. Farah stuck doggedly to his task and chased Mottram who broke away after two miles for most of the race to finish in an excellent time of 28:37.

That performance exactly matched the fastest-amrk set by a Briton last year achieved by Chris Davies in the BUPA Great Manchester Run. It was a positive step forward for the Somalian-born athlete and showed he has benefited from the time he has spent at altitude training with Mottram.

Mottram lost a US$10,000 dollars by just three seconds when missing Paul Koech's course record which the Kenyan ran nine-years-ago. The Aussie said: "The goal here was first and foremost to win and the record was an added bonus.

"I was 15 seconds faster than when I won last year, so those things were good and I can't be too disappointed. I knew I was on the pace but it was a lonely second half of the race. I could have done it with someone out there with me, because it can be quite disorientating out there in the park on your own. Itis a long way around the park."
