Patrick Makau adds further proof of Kenya’s dominance in Berlin

If further proof were needed of the ascendancy of Kenyan distance running over their perennial rivals, the Ethiopians, notwithstanding the substantial inconvenience offered by the likes of Mo Farah, Bernard Lagat and Galen Rupp on the track, and Ryan Hall on the road, then it came with this weekend’s results from the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON.

The Inline skating races at the 38th edition of the BMW BERLIN MARATHON produced two sensational results: Sabine Berg from Gera won the women’s title in a mass sprint and the Frenchman Ewen Fernandez took the men’s crown after a daring breakaway from 21 kilometres. For the first time in 12 years a German stood on top of the podium. The 21-year-old Sabine Berg (Powerslide Matter World Team) clocked 1:14:56 to beat both the previous year’s winner Giovanna Turchiarelli (ITA/Alessi World Team,...

Patrick Makau runs world record with 2:03:38, Florence Kiplagat wins women’s race, followed by Irina Mikitenko and Paula Radcliffe

Patrick Makau has crowned the 38th BMW BERLIN MARATHON with a world record. The 26 year-old Kenyan clocked 2:03:38, beating Haile Gebrselassie and improving the record of the Ethiopian by 21 seconds. With a dramatic surge after 27 k defending champion Patrick Makau had dropped Haile Gebrselassie well behind. While the Ethiopian later dropped out after the 35 k mark he lost another world record to Patrick Makau on a miserable day for him: The Kenyan had passed the 30 k mark in 1:27:38, eleven...

Super BMW BERLIN-MARATHON in Prospect

All roads lead to Berlin. First, on Thursday, came women’s world record holder, Paula Radcliffe, ready to revive a flagging career in Sunday’s 38th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON. Later that day, the German Pope arrived, and drove part of the marathon course, en route to say mass in the Olympic Stadium. Then today, Friday, came the heavenly twins of men’s marathoning – world record holder and living legend Haile Gebrselassie, and last year’s Berlin winner Patrick Makau, out to strengthen his tenuous grasp...

Paula Radcliffe’s long moment of truth?

It should be a match made in heaven, the women’s marathon world record holder finally running on the universally recognised fastest marathon course in the world. But it’s been two years since Paula Radcliffe ran a 42.195k race, finishing fourth in New York 2009, and, on her own admission today, “I was hurting”.

Her only race since then was, again in her own words, “a bit of a disaster”. That was a 10k in London in May, when she finished a poor third, in 33.17, the sort of time that she did...
