Oct 2003 Lel takes gold for Kenya as Tanzania win first team gold

After a closely run race, Martin Lel won the final sprint to snatch individual

gold for Kenya in the men’s race in Vilamoura this morning, while a gutsy

run from John Yuda won Tanzania its first ever team gold in the World Half

Marathon Championships.

For much of the 21 kilometres of this World Half Marathon Championships, the

race had had been dominated by a tightly bunched lead pack of ten athletes,

with the East Africa nations of Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania contesting both

Kenyans continue to dominate

The Kenyans were slowed by the worst sort of “April Weather“ as it

is called in Germany – but still there was no way stopping them on their

way to yet another great triumph on Berlins roads. The Bewag BERLIN HALF

MARATHON seems to be their race.

Last year they took a record first 13 places, this time they took the first

eight. Though also the sun was shining for short times it seemed to be much

harder for the Kenyans to fight against winds, snow showers and even hail than

against other runners....


This years Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON will once again be Germanys big season

opener. Running gets more and more popular in Germany – and this is also

proved by the development of the by far biggest half marathon in this country.

With altogether probably around 17,500 starters the 23rd edition of this

traditional race has once more grown substantially. And the Bewag BERLIN HALF

MARATHON is well on the way to become a sort of brother of the real,- BERLIN

Charity Partnership Continues

The Deutsche Welthungerhilfe/German Agro-Action will be starting for the second

time as the charity partner of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON on September 27-28,

2003. This continues last years successful partnership with the event

organiser, SCC-RUNNING. The goal of this years partnership is to assist the

people of Iraq through sport. One way is for runners to have people sponsor

them by the kilometre or minute.

The real,- BERLIN-MARATHON now also makes it possible to make a donation


... smile at the finish of the Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON !

On Sunday, April 6, “smiling“ is called for from the participants

at the finish of the 23rd Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON on Alexanderstraße.

The participants will be greeted at the finish by a photographer, who will

take pictures of the happy faces as they cross the finish line. SCC RUNNING,

the organiser, already has reason to “smile“, for there are already

13,874 participants registered for the spring classic half marathon race

(21,0975 km), a new record.

Five weeks before the 23rd Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON on April 6, 2003, the

When the SCC RUNNING organisers announced that the start and finish of the

anniversary event of the 30th real,- BERLIN MARATHON on September 27-28, 2003
