On the Thursday following the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON, a group from the organizer SCC EVENTS came together to get active around the start and finish area once more – this time not for work, but for the environment. In what is known as “plogging,” they combined running with collecting litter, ensuring that even the very last bits of waste were removed after the event.

Diverse measures for waste prevention and collection

During the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON itself, a wide range of measures for waste prevention and collection were already implemented: along the course, cups were collected separately, thermal blankets and deposit bottles were placed in designated collection points, and clothing discarded by runners before the start was reused. Cups, blankets, and bottles are sent for recycling. In addition, the waste management company Alba carried out professional cleaning.

Joint commitment and responsible action

With the plogging initiative, SCC EVENTS emphasizes that sustainability does not end at the finish line. Instead, the group demonstrated how a major sporting event and responsible treatment of the environment can go hand in hand through collective effort. Equipped with garbage bags, grabbers, and gloves, the ploggers covered about seven kilometers in the start and finish area, including the Tiergarten, collecting several bags of waste. The group was surprised to find so little marathon-specific litter – a sign of Alba’s quality work and confirmation of the saying that Berlin’s streets are cleaner after the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON than before. Motivated by this success, thoughts are already turning to a similar initiative for the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON in April 2026.
