Whether in running shoes, on rollers or on wheels - we spend a lot of time in nature while practising our sport. We love to run through forests, along lakes and meadows during training. Protecting this natural environment is a top priority for us. In cooperation with the WWF as our official charity partner, we have been committed for years to making our running events more sustainable and collecting donations for nature and environmental protection.
Our engagement
We move Berlin - and not just in sport!
More than 70,000 participants from over 150 nations, many of whom come in company, not only ensure top sporting performances, but also enormous turnover - for example in gastronomy and hotel business.
Motivation for the next generation
Also the youngest can experience the joy of running. We inspire children with the Bambini runs, and we continue this commitment with around 10,000 pupils with the mini marathon.
Living diversity
Equal rights and inclusion are among the core values of SCC EVENTS and the BMW BERLIN-MARAHON.
Helping where the shoe pinches
Together with the Berliner Stadtmission (Berlin City Mission), we collect well-preserved running clothing and shoes to pass on to people in need.
Green mobility
We have set up a free local transit BVG ticket as well as an event ticket for discounted travel by train.
Thermal blankets
For years, used thermal blankets have been pressed into bales and returned to the manufacturer. The raw material is then used again to produce new thermal blankets.
Refreshment points
We offer refill stations for your own hydration systems at all refreshment points. We are also using more and more reusable cups, which are mainly made from renewable raw materials.
What you can do!
We need your help when it comes to sustainability. Is it possible to travel to the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON by train? Or can you form car pools? Are you familiar with the various ways of avoiding waste at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON? Do you know about our recycling options? Find out more here and at our SCC EVENTS-EXPO stand. You can find the programme and other exciting information on the topic of sustainability during the event week here and on our Instagram and Facebook channel.
Return your thermal blanket
Please only use a thermal blanket if you are cold and really need it. Please always return used blankets the numerous recycling helpers (labelled with a flag). This is the only way to turn it back into foil.
Use your own hydration system
Avoid cups by bringing your own hydration system and using our refill stations. Otherwise, throw used cups into the specially labelled bins so that they can be returned to the cycle.
Offset your flight emissions
Many participants have to travel to and from the race by plane. By offsetting your flight emissions, you help to reduce the ecological footprint of the event.
Use public transport - free of charge!
The best way to get around in Berlin is to use public transport, which is free with your bip number (from Thursday to Sunday in the ABC fare zones).
Travel by train
If you can, come to Berlin by train and use the most environmentally friendly way of travelling. Good to know: We have set up an event ticket with Deutsche Bahn for your discounted journey!
Run for a good cause
Register for the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON through a charity partner such as the WWF and combine your run with a fundraising campaign.
Donate clean clothing in good condition in the pre-start area
On race day, you can first put on your well-preserved running and training clothes as a warming layer and then hand them over to the Berlin City Mission. This will benefit homeless people.
Donate your worn-out, clean running shoes
Bring your worn-out, well-preserved running shoes to the EXPO and donate them to the Berliner Stadtmission (Berlin City Mission) at the SCC EVENTS information stand. This will help people in need and homless.
ISO certification for sustainable event management
In 2018, we laid the foundation for our previous environmental protection measures with the introduction of the EU environmental management system EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme). Since then, the SCC EVENTS office and the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON have been certified according to EMAS.
In 2024, we decided to switch to a certification that covers sustainability in all three dimensions - i.e. economic and social aspects in addition to ecological aspects. We opted for ISO 20121 certification for sustainable event management. As a first step, the sustainable planning of the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2024 has already been certified according to this standard. Our medium-term goal is to be certified as SCC EVENTS with all our events and our office.
