real,- BERLIN-MARATHON: Gebrselassie and Habtamu triumph in World Marathon Majors race

The Ethiopian duo of Haile Gebrselassie and Atsede Habtamu Besuye earned maximum points in the World Marathon Majors (WMM) rankings with their double success in the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON. While Gebrselassie achieved his fourth victory in a WMM race, Habtamu completed a dream debut: on her very first appearance in a WMM event she collected 25 points.

 

Gebrselassie takes fourth real,- BERLIN-MARATHON win

Haile Gebrselassie won the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON for the fourth year in succession this morning. But having reached for the stars with a ferocious attempt to break his world record of 2.03.59, set in the German capital last year, the Ethiopian ended up with a handful of moondust, finishing in a jog of fatigue in 2.06.08. “I was very tired, I pushed too much,” he said immediately afterwards.

Haile Gebrselassie returns to his "own" marathon in Berlin

At an age when most successful athletes might prefer to slump in front of the television, rather than thrash out another 20k (at altitude); or at best, hold the stopwatch while someone else goes through their paces, Haile Gebrselassie lines up on Sunday, in an attempt to win the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON for the fourth year in succession.

Gebrselassie versus Kibet – the fastest marathon duel ever?

No one could have imagined that the BERLIN-MARATHON would become one of the most spectacular sports events in Germany when the race was started for the first time 35 years ago. That happened next to the Grunewald, a forest in West Berlin, and there were only few spectators. Today the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON attracts around one million people who celebrate one of the greatest running events on the globe.

Public Transportation in Berlin with limited Capacities

Due to technical problems with trains public transportation in Berlin is working on limited capacities. Please, check with your hotel and/or travel group management, and plan for more time on race day morning. Trains are running less frequently than normally. Problems occur only at lines of the S-Bahn. Subways (U-Bahn) are running on normal schedule.

Do something good and at the same time secure one of the last cherished starting slots for the marathon highlight of 2009. The last 100 race numbers are being offered immediately as “charity numbers”. The 200 euros for the charity numbers will benefit the Berlin children’s project ARCHE.

Showdown in Berlin: World record holder Gebrselassie faces this year´s top marathoner Duncan Kibet at the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON on September 20th. Both are aiming for a world record

Duncan Kibet of Kenya won this year’s Rotterdam Marathon with a time of 2:04:27 hours. The only one to have run faster twice is world record holder Haile Gebrselassie from Ethiopia: with 2:04:26 at his world record race in Berlin in 2007 and 2:03:59 in Berlin in 2008. On September 20th at the real,- BERLIN MARATHON, the two current fastest marathon runners in the world will both try to run under the mark Gebrselassie set here last year.

Fast times for Kipyego and Mockenhaupt in the 29th Vattenfall BERLIN HALF MARATHON

Bernard Kipyego and Sabrina Mockenhaupt won the men’s and women’s titles at the 29th Vattenfall BERLIN HALF MARATHON. The Kenyan took the title in the world-class time of 59:34, making one of the fastest debuts ever at the half-marathon while Germany’s women’s champion improved her personal best to 68:45, the fastest time by a German woman this year. Top Contenders at the Vattenfall BERLINER HALF MARATHON on April 5th

Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich and Sabrina Mockenhaupt head the field of top contenders at the Vattenfall BERLINER HALFMARATHON next Sunday (Start: 10.45 a.m.). Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich finished sixth in last year´s race with 61:03 clearly behind winner and fellow countryman from Kenya, Patrich Makau Musyoki. Since then the Kipsang Kiprotich improved by more than two minutes and returns to the Vattenfall BERLIN HALF MARATHON as the favourite.
